Test post for sharing.


You may remember that I once worked as a designer for Beans and Strings, a local music school with a full-service coffee bar. My old friends Eric and Vanessa Foster-Whiddon started the company in January 2010, and since then it has grown into the most popular live-music destination in town, as well as the most popular coffee shop in the county.

Fortunately for both of us, they’ve done well enough that they are now selling their own packaged blends of coffee via Grassroots Coffee, a shop in Thomasville, Georgia that also roasts and sells custom lends. Eric asked me to design the packaging, which, though exciting, was a first for me.

After going back and forth, this is what we came up with. (Note: 1-2-Ready-Go! is a collaboration between myself and Eric; my elements, his implementation).

I’ve got some really cool shots of the final packaging coming, so stay posted (I’ll just say that we make some pretty creative uses of recycled guitar strings). If you’re interested in the coffee, here’s what they’ve got:

1, 2, Ready Go

  • Mild medium roast nutty and caramel notes with a light chocolate body.
  • Make-up: 80% Central American 20% South American beans

Blue Note

  • Bright and citric up front with a medium body, made up of earthy and cocoa notes.
  • Make-up: 50% Central American 50% African beans

Elvis Ate Dinner

  • Dark Roast, with light hints of caramel and sweetness up front with a thick body made up of earthy notes and slightly burnt raspberry
  • Make-up: 50% Central American 50% Indonesian beans

Amory-Warburg Wedding

Jami Lyn and I are excited about heading back to the coast weekend, but not for the usual reasons. Sure, (no. 1 in the country) Georgia Southern has a football game Saturday, and sure, we’ll take any and every excuse to go back to Savannah, but this weekend in special. Because, on Sunday afternoon my little sister Allison is getting hitched! We couldn’t be happier for her and Brian, and I was honored that they asked me to design their invitations and wedding programs for them.

Above is the wedding title, used as the invitation and the cover for the programs. Her colors are blue and yellow (think Georgia Tech’s old gold and navy, Brian’s alma mater) and she’s an artsy gal, so I got the chance to doll it up a bit. She’s also a big fan of birds.

Congratulations to you both! We can’t wait to see you guys on your big day Sunday.

While at Georgia Southern, I had the joy of working on some university departmental nameplates. Here are a few.

Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management

This is the most widely-used logo I got to work on. The Division of SAEM is one of the largest divisions at the university, and this logo has been used on everything from notepads to banners to big screens; anything the division sponsors. The coolest use I got to see was on a massive projection screen in the basketball arena behind Condoleezza Rice as she spoke to thousands of faculty and staff. It gives a feller a good feeling knowing it’s up there doing its job.

Southern Legacy Student Foundation

Unfortunately, this nameplate was rejected, and the division went another direction. I still REALLY like it a lot. They wanted the image of the great oaks planted on the historic old campus circle, strong and reliable, in their new fundraising drive.


Early Work

Here’s some early work I did for a local band, Eric Foster-Whiddon and the Summer Associate, circa 2006.

One of my recurring projects from the last few years has been the Georgia Southern University Honors Program’s correspondence magazine, Honors@Georgia Southern. I built it from scratch and have spent the past three years refining the templates and styles to pass on to the next student to take over. While working on it, the magazine won Best Magazine by the National Collegiate Honors Council. Which I guess is a big deal, of sorts. Here’s the opening spread for this year’s feature on students studying abroad in Egypt, just weeks before protests erupted.

I’m a production manager for a printing company. It’s a great job for me, given my knack for walking around and looking at paper and such. But today while making my rounds, I realized that I’m living a Rockstar game.

The premise is always the same: a free-roaming environment in which you stumble upon people who need a job done. You help them, you get paid, you go back to roaming.

The press room and printing plant are my free-roaming environment. I have a safehouse (my office) tucked away from all of the action of the plant where I can escape to (and do things like type a blog entry at lunch). Granted, there aren’t as many (or any) hookers, pimps, cops, shop owners or guidos, but I have a cool collection of interesting characters of my own.

I wander around, keeping track of everything that’s going on until someone has a problem; like today: “Donny” in shipping had a lost package that he needed me to find. Of course, pretending that I’m grabbing some smuggled goods and running them to some abandoned shipping yard makes the search way more exciting than it actually is. And, just like in the games, I finish my errand, get paid and go back to roaming.

Here’s the June entertainment schedule poster for one of my clients and dear friends, Beans and Strings. Known to locals as the “Coffee Shop that Rocks,” owners Eric and Vanessa Foster-Whiddon run the shop as a coffee house and music center for the small town of Moultrie. Beans offers lessons, repairs, setups and hot and cold drinks six days a week, with Open Mic nights every Friday and cheap shows every Saturday. You can check them out here.
